THE VIRTUAL FITNESS CHALLENGE IS A GRASSROOTS FITNESS EVENT CREATED TO RAISE FUNDS FOR THE MISSION COVID-19 RELIEF FUND TO ENRICH THE LIVES OF AT-RISK CANCER SURVIVORS. YOUR COMMITMENT WILL HELP US IN OFFERING NEWLY LAUNCHED VIRTUAL PROGRAMS SUCH AS LIVE AND ON-DEMAND EXERCISE CLASSES, NUTRITION AND MEDITATION WORKSHOPS, MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT, AND MUSIC THERAPY.

GENESIS

SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE COVID-19 CRISIS, ONE THING HAS BEEN CLEAR: PEOPLE WITH A COMPROMISED IMMUNE SYSTEM ARE AT INCREASED RISK. AND THIS POPULATION INCLUDES PEOPLE DEALING WITH A CANCER DIAGNOSIS. THE COVID-19 CANCER SURVIVOR RELIEF FUND WAS INITIATED IN ORDER TO PROVIDE VIRTUAL RESOURCES FOR THOSE IMPACTED BY CANCER. THE FUNDS RAISED WILL GO TOWARDS:

VIRTUAL MUSIC THERAPY
MUSIC HAS BEEN SHOWN TO HAVE BENEFICIAL EFFECTS ON ANXIETY, PAIN, FATIGUE, AND QUALITY OF LIFE, WITH SMALL EFFECTS ON HEART RATE, RESPIRATORY RATE, AND BLOOD PRESSURE, IN A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF 52 CLINICAL TRIALS INVOLVING 3,731 PATIENTS WITH CANCER. IT WAS ALSO REPORTED TO IMPROVE COPING AND SOCIAL INTEGRATION AND REDUCE MOOD DISTURBANCE IN PATIENTS UNDERGOING HEMATOPOIETIC STEM CELL TRANSPLANTATION, A PROCEDURE ASSOCIATED WITH HIGH LEVELS OF DISTRESS.

THROUGH MYVICTORY, SURVIVORS AND SUPPORTERS HAVE ACCESS TO A DAILY SCHEDULE OF LIVE-STREAMED FITNESS CLASSES, PLUS A VAST LIBRARY OF VARIOUS FITNESS CLASS TYPES AND DIFFICULTY LEVELS. NOW, MORE THAN EVER, IT HAS BECOME CLEAR THAT WE ARE ALL SURVIVORS OF SOME SORT. WE HAVE ALL SEEN FIRST-HAND THE HARDSHIPS THAT SURVIVORS HAVE OVERCOME. SO, WHETHER YOU VIEW YOURSELF AS A SURVIVOR OR A SUPPORTER, IT DOESN’T MATTER; YOU ARE WELCOME TO JOIN MYVICTORY DURING THIS TRYING TIME WHEN AT HOME EXERCISE MAY BE THE ONLY OPTION FOR YOU.

VIRTUAL NUTRITION WEBINARS
MOST NUTRITION RECOMMENDATIONS INCLUDE EATING A DIET HIGH IN FRUITS, VEGETABLES, AND WHOLE GRAINS. THE EFFECT OF SPECIFIC DIETARY FACTORS ON CANCER SURVIVAL RATES IS NOT YET WELL UNDERSTOOD. BUT A HEALTHY DIET IS IMPORTANT FOR CANCER SURVIVORS BECAUSE THEY MAY HAVE A HIGHER RISK OF OTHER HEALTH CONDITIONS, SUCH AS HEART DISEASE, TYPE 2 DIABETES, AND WEAKENING OF THE BONES.
TO LOWER THE RISK OF OTHER DISEASES, DOCTORS GENERALLY RECOMMEND THAT CANCER SURVIVORS FOLLOW COMMON RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GOOD HEALTH. INCLUDING: EATING A NUTRIENT-DENSE AND PLANT-BASED DIET, QUITTING SMOKING, MAINTAINING A HEALTHY WEIGHT, MINIMIZING ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION, AND STAYING PHYSICALLY ACTIVE.

VIRTUAL GROUP SUPPORT THERAPY
HAVING CANCER IS OFTEN ONE OF THE MOST STRESSFUL EXPERIENCES IN A PERSON’S LIFE. BUT SUPPORT GROUPS HELP MANY PEOPLE COPE WITH THE EMOTIONAL ASPECTS OF CANCER BY PROVIDING A SAFE PLACE TO SHARE AND WORK THROUGH FEELINGS AND CHALLENGES. THEY ALSO ALLOW PEOPLE TO LEARN FROM OTHERS FACING SIMILAR SITUATIONS.

VIRTUAL MEDITATION WORKSHOPS
SEVERAL STUDIES HAVE DOCUMENTED THE VALUE OF MEDITATION IN MANAGING BOTH PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS ASSOCIATED WITH CANCER AND ITS TREATMENTS. PARTICIPATING IN A MINDFULNESS PROGRAM HAS PRODUCED PERCEIVED POSITIVE EFFECTS INCLUDING INCREASED CALM, ENHANCED SLEEP QUALITY, MORE ENERGY, LESS PHYSICAL PAIN, AND INCREASED WELL-BEING. THESE FINDINGS SHOW THAT THROUGH MINDFULNESS, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO ENHANCE YOUR CAPACITY TO HANDLE THE LIFE STRESSES THAT AFFECT THE BODY’S ABILITY TO HEAL.
