We all love getting out on dreamy summer days, but as the temperatures soar, it’s important to keep your dog happy and healthy in the warmer weather. Our pups can’t tolerate heat as well as we can, so keeping them cool is essential for their comfort and well-being and reducing the risk of heatstroke.
5 Top Tips to Protect Your Pack
1. Choose walking times wisely
Avoid taking your dogs out in the hottest part of the day and opt for early morning or dusk, when the temperatures are generally cooler. Be mindful of the route you take. Try shady woodland paths instead of direct sunlight, or consider incorporating a swimming spot like a stream so your pup can enjoy a refreshing dip.
2. Stay hydrated
Water is essential for your dog’s health all year round, but it is especially vital in warmer weather. Make sure your pup has plenty to drink before and after walks and pack fresh, cool water to take with you to hydrate on the go.
3. Protect the paws
Sidewalks can become scorching hot in the sun, so avoid them if possible to prevent burning paw pads. If unsure, check the temperature with your hand to see if the surface is too hot for little paws.
4. Slow things down
The heat can be hard work for canine companions, so slow down the pace and make sure you break up walks with lots of water breaks, giving them a chance to rest. Once home, treat them to a cooling mat or a cool, damp towel to lie down on. If your fur baby is fond of water, why not let them splash around in a paddling pool in a shady spot?
5. Indulge in a cooling treat
Along with plenty of water, why not offer your dog a chilled or frozen treat as a tasty way to cool down post-walk? We love this Top Dog Food & Supply recipe for DIY and delicious, healthy Peanut butter Pupsicles.
