In 2002, at age 22, instead of his senior year in college, Matthew Jones started a journey few thought he would survive: acute myeloid leukemia (AML) that would return seven months after completing three intense months of chemo. He relapsed twice, survived a metastasis to his cerebral spinal fluid and complications that left him in a coma. At one point, he had less than a 10 percent chance of surviving.
Now a motivational speaker, Matthew said in his blog, written when he was training for his final marathon, “There is power when you have intention, belief, and take action. At the heart of my message is that if I can go from not being able to take one step to now training for my seventh marathon on my seventh continent in Antarctica, imagine what’s possible for you! It just starts with you taking that first step. It also starts with appreciating all the things you have to be thankful for.”
